As the likes of Jessica, Hannah, Andy and Mo return to their lives after their recent triumphs in the Olympic Stadium, we are sure they will be pleased to know that their legacy lives on. Minutes from the stadium, in Hackney's glorious Victoria Park, members of Team Women and Children First celebrated their own victories having completed the City vs Wharf 5k.
The team members, made up almost exclusively of 'work neighbours' renting office space in the wonderful Busworks Building, all succeeded in achieving their own individual goals - for most of them it was their first race; some just wanted to get to the finish line in one piece, others to get there without stopping - a special congratulations goes to our youngest team member (12) who not only ran in a very admirable 28 minutes, but also made some wonderful flap jack to share with the team after the race. A heartfelt thank you to you all, and to all the people who sponsored you.
One thing the whole team have in common is the desire to raise funds to reduce infant mortality and improve maternal health in some of the poorest parts of our world, some motivated by their own experiences of a safe delivery under the care of the NHS. Read these extracts from a couple of their Virgin Money Giving Pages:
"If we lived in much of Asia and Africa, Amy and I wouldn't be here today. We were lucky to have our wonderful NHS who were there the whole way before pregnancy and most importantly when we needed an emergency caesarian." Sandy
"...it's surprising how many people we have in our lives who, without timely interventions from our NHS, would not have survived the process - in some cases the mum, some the baby, in some both. You probably have the same among your own friends." Caroline
