Safe Motherhood
Every year, hundreds of thousands of women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth, the vast majority of them in the developing world.
Safe motherhood means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth. This, in practice, means addressing all the factors that make pregnancy unsafe.
Women and Children First, in partnership with other organisations across the world, works on a whole range of intitiatives at every level, particularly through women’s groups that empower women themselves, in order to promote Safe Motherhood.

Saving Lives
Over a quarter of a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards, the majority of them in Africa and South Asia. For every woman who dies at least twenty more suffer complications which leave them with lifelong disability and pain.
Our unique programmes are saving the lives of mothers and babies every day. We need you to help us to equip women with their most vital survival tool: knowledge.
